The Sazerac Rye Whiskey, named after the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans – the origin of the Sazerac cocktail, is produced at the Buffalo Trace distillery in Kentucky. It is matured for six years in newly charred American white oak barrels and the bottle design is inspired by the period before the American Civil War.
The Buffalo Trace distillery, which has been in operation since 1857 and was named after a historic buffalo trail, was one of the six distilleries to receive a license to produce alcohol for medicinal purposes during Prohibition from 1920 to 1933. Today, in addition to Sazerac Rye, the distillery also produces other well-known brands such as Buffalo Trace, Blanton’s, Eagle Rare, E.H. Taylor and Pappy van Winkle.
