William Larue Weller was the first in Kentucky to use wheat instead of rye together with corn for whiskey production. The company was founded in 1849 and during Prohibition Weller merged with the Stitzel Distillery to form the Stitzel-Weller Distillery. Today, Weller whiskeys are produced by the Buffalo Trace Distillery, which also owns other major whiskey brands such as Blanton’s, Elmer T. Lee and Sazerac. Despite a sometimes complex history regarding brand rights and company mergers, the quality and variety of bourbon whiskey has increased in recent years.
