El Jolgorio, which translates to “the revelry,” is a brand of traditional mezcal that has been an integral part of small festivals known as “jolgorios” in remote mountain villages throughout Oaxaca, Mexico. These festivals commemorate significant events such as births, deaths, weddings, and Saint’s days. The Corts family, in 2010, began building a collective of top mezcal distillers from different regions of Oaxaca, Mexico, and as of 2019, El Jolgorio represents sixteen different families, each with its own special story. Every bottle is meticulously marked by hand with the specific details of each batch, connecting the drinker with the family behind the expression.
In 2017, the El Jolgorio team realized that certain varieties of agave would only be available in extremely limited quantities, and they began packaging these rare editions in black bottles to set them apart from other releases.
The brand’s first 8 releases featured artwork by Alejandro Pea, including Espadin, Pechuga, Tobala, Cuixe, Madrecuixe, Tepeztate, Barril, and Mexicano. Asis Cortes created the labels for the following 5 releases, which included Arroqueno, Jabalin, Coyote, Tobaxiche, and Cenizo. Alberto Almnza designed the artwork for the Sierrudo label.
Crafted with unsurpassed artistry by Gregorio Martinez and Valentin Cortes, El Jolgorio Tobala is a mezcal made from wild maguey Tobala, which grows in high altitudes and yields limited quantities of intensely aromatic spirits due to its relatively small size. This delicious mezcal has a very fresh and aromatic profile, with a rich and heavy fruit scent. On the palate, it offers notes of mango and roasted agave, with a pleasingly viscous texture.
