As a popular alcoholic national drink of Turkey, raki cannot be missing from Turkish celebrations, be it a cozy meal with friends at home, a big party or an evening in a restaurant. Raki has been produced for about 300 years in Anatolia from anise, white granulated sugar and soft spring water.
For Yeni Seri, only the best anise seeds from western Anatolia and a base of rich, ripe grapes are used in its production. The spirit is stored for some time in oak barrels and is distilled twice.
The taste of raki depends mainly on the quality of grapes used and anise. Since anise is completely dissolved in the alcohol, it is invisible in the raki but still distinct to smell and taste. The white cloudiness – which has also earned the raki the name lion’s milk – occurs when water is added to raki.
